Rare Blue Whales, Stranded and Dead on NTT Beach

Residents on the coast of Nunhila Beach, Alak District, Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), were in an uproar when they saw the carcass of a pygmy blue or dwarf blue whale, Tuesday (07/21/2020).

The whale carcass is approximately 29 meters long and weighs more than 1 ton. Hundreds of residents immediately came to see the whale carcass. According to the Head of the Kupang National Water Conservation Area (BKPPN), Ikram Sangadji, the whale is thought to have died due to illness.

He said, the blue whale that was stranded and died was a rare whale and protected by law so that no one could cut to take the meat.

From temporary observations, the outer shell of the whale carcass has been peeled off on several sides.

Then, the whale's body seemed to have bulged.

From preliminary information, the whale was first discovered by seashellers around the coast at 17.00 WITA.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday (07/22/2020), the position of the whale carcasses had shifted due to being dragged by the sea currents. The Head of the Technical Department for the Conservation of Natural Resources (BBKSDA) of NTT said that the position of the whale carcasses had shifted to the Semau Strait, Kupang Regency.

"At this time friends from BBKSDA NTT, BKKPN Kupang, and related agencies are preparing for evacuation," said Zaydi.
